Matcha is like mochi. You either love it or hate it. If you’re here, I assume you’re in the second group. And if not, maybe you’ll be inspired to give it another try after reading this post!

I love matcha more than most of the things in my superfood pantry. I use it in smoothies, baking, oats, chia pudding and to make my version of a bulletproof morning drink.

Here, I share my all-time favorite matcha recipes from my archives and from around the internet, but first…

Why is matcha good for you, how is it different from green tea powder, and what are some fun way to eat and drink it?

Matcha Chia Pudding on the go

WHAT IS MATCHA:

Matcha is processed green tea leaves that have been stone-ground into a powder (typically in Japan, where it’s been used in the legendary tea ceremonies by Zen Masters for centuries).

It’s different from green tea because you ingest the whole powdered green tea leaf, not just the brewed water. Matcha does have caffeine, but it’s only about half of the caffeine in coffee.

FLAVOR:

Smooth, earthy, green tea-like.

BENEFITS:

Grown in the shade, matcha tea retains a beautiful green color along with an incredible amount of nutrients, including antioxidants, fiber, amino acids, and chlorophyll. It is said that matcha can calm your mind, boost energy and metabolism, detoxify, and help prevent heart disease.

Matcha gives you an energy boost and it lasts longer than after a coffee boost, because it contains L-Theanine amino acid. L-Theanine has a calming effect that relaxes the brain. Bottom line: it has all the right chemicals to send your body “feel good” signals.

WHERE TO BUY MATCHA:

Some of my favorite Matcha brands are:

  1. PiqueTea Sun Goddess Matcha – organic matcha developed with some of the most acclaimed world’s matcha experts, it’s quadruple screened for toxins like fluoride and heavy metals. What’s different about this matcha is that there’s no need to whisk it, you just add water – super convenient on the go, just ask for hot water at any cafe and shake it up! Plus, it’s one of the best tasting matchas I’ve tried so far. 28 single serving sticks, $58 ($2 per serving) for 56 grams on piquetea.com. Use code KSENIA for 5% off.
  2. Matcha Kari – organic super high-quality matcha sourced through one of Japan’s finest tea-farms in Uji, Japan, matcha’s birthplace. The brand is co-founded by the pioneer of integrative medicine Dr. Andrew Weil, who I trust implicitly. Learn about matcha’s top health benefits and watch Dr. Weil make matcha here. Matcha Kari has a variety of matcha available on the pricier side. One of my favorites is the Morning Ritual Ceremonial Grade Matcha at $52 for 30 grams ($1.7 per serving). You can save when you subscribe or buy the bigger tin. They also have fantastic “Matcha on the Go” Ceremonial Stick Packs ($1.3 per serving) that don’t require any tools to make the perfect cup of matcha – just shake it up!
  3. Akira Matcha – Organic Premium Ceremonial Matcha Tea Powder, I buy this matcha when I need quick Amazon delivery. It’s listed as 30 1/2-teaspoon servings, however from my experience it’s much better to use 1 full teaspoon per serving. $24.95 ($1.6 per serving) for 30 grams on amazon.com.
  4. Matchaful Hikari Single Origin Ceremonial Matcha – this matcha is fantastic, and so are their New York cafes. Single origin matcha does taste more pure, and this is a great matcha if you’re looking for an elevated matcha experience. $33.90 ($2.3 per serving) for 30 grams on amazon.com.

Traditional Ceremonial Matcha Latte

  1. Heat water to 175 degrees. Avoid boiling hot water as it will bring out a bitter flavor.
  2. Sift one teaspoon matcha to a small bowl or a matcha bowl and slowly whisk in 2 teaspoons water with a bamboo matcha whisk to form a paste. Add 1 cup more water, whisking in “M” shape to create foam. Add less water for a more concentrated drink.
  3. Serve with intention.

Milky Matcha Latte:

You can also use milk or 50/50 milk/water to make a matcha latte. Use 1.5 cups unsweetened milk of your choice. I recommend almond, cashew, coconut, oat milk or hemp milk (hemp milk and oat milk froth the best).

Iced Matcha Latte

  1. Blend 1 teaspoon matcha (or Matcha Collagen), 1.5 cup milk of choice and 1 teaspoon sweetener of your choice in a high-speed blender. Serve over ice. If you’re out of nut milk, you can blend matcha with 1 tablespoon nut butter (like almond or cashew) and 1.5 cups water.
