Let’s get one thing clear: we all make resolutions. Promising yourself that you are only going to eat healthy food in the New Year is quite the commitment. Much more easy and fun is to pick one goal, and actually follow through with it. For example, aim to start every day with a superfood breakfast. Sounds simple, but oh so powerful.

I started my love affair with açaí, the magical Amazon berry, exactly a year ago in Hawaii. Having nourishing superfood smoothie bowls topped with granola, coconut and fresh fruit is a big part of the Aloha culture.

The thing is, it’s very easy to make your own açaí bowl, and to modify it according to your taste and diet. You can add in some spinach to get your greens in without even tasting them. Then, top it in the most creative way possible, pretending that you’re Picasso.

Here’s a secret: the fact that a meal looks like a piece of art, doesn’t mean that it took hours to be created. Putting a little energy into the first meal of the day benefits you on all levels, most importantly, making you feel straight up amazing.

MANGO AÇAI SMOOTHIE BOWL

vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, sugar-free, serves 2

Blend:

  • 1 Açaí smoothie pack (I use unsweetened Tambor Acai packs)
  • 1 ripe frozen banana
  • ½ cup strawberries
  • ½ mango
  • 2 tbs raw cacao powder
  • 1 tsp maca
  • 2/3 cup coconut water

Toppings (use what’s available!)

  • 1 banana
  • ½ mango
  • Handful of papaya (optional; great to boost your digestion)
  • ¼ cup berries (I used raspberries and blueberries)
  • 1/3 cup granola
  • 3 tbs flax seeds
  • 2 tbs goji berries
  • 2 tbs raw cacao nibs
  • ¼ cup raw coconut chips

Nutrients
This smoothie bowl is full of antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin A, digestive enzymes, potassium, fiber and iron.

Benefits
This smoothie bowl alkalizes your body, improves digestion, lowers inflammation and cholesterol, gives you a boost of energy (hello, maca!) and helps control hormones, and supports bone and teeth health. On top of that, anandamide, a lipid found in cacao nibs, is also known as “the bliss molecule.”
