I recently quit my nomadic lifestyle after a 6 months of living out of a suitcase. My adventures took me from the açaí rainforest in the Amazon jungle to a remote permaculture bungalow hotel in Bali.

My original plan was to travel for 16 months, but one day… truth be told, one very lonely night, a strong desire arose.

A desire to have a home, to have my own kitchen, and be close to my community.

Everything was pointing back to New York, the place I’d called home for 5 years before setting off for traveling.

Last month, I settled in my dream apartment in New York (how it came about is a whole different story).

As a housewarming gift to myself, I knew I wanted a voice-activated speaker that would play music, help me compile shopping lists, look up weather and set reminders.

Soon after I decided I’m ready to make this gift for myself, Google reached out and offered to send me a Google Home device to test. BINGO! Instant manifestation. Little did I know that it could also be a sous-chef!

My Google Home not only makes my day by playing Frank Sinatra when I ask it to “play cooking music”, but also gives me spoken step-by-step cooking instructions. You can either ask it to find a recipe on Google or find a recipe on your phone and press “Send To Google Home” for later.

Then, you start cooking by saying “Ok Google, start cooking”. It will read out loud the ingredients and instructions. I love that there’s a conversational element to the process. Google Home asks me if I’m ready before giving me the next step, and can even repeat the steps if you didn’t catch something. The whole process is so cool. I feel like I’m in a sci-fi movie!

To test out Google Home as my sous-chef, I picked the Supercharged Peanut Butter Fudge recipe on IQuitSugar.com, and sent it to my Google Home.

My assistant passed the test, giving me step-by-step instructions and keeping my screens safe from peanut butter spills. I also love that Google Home keeps playing the music in the background even while it’s reading out the instructions to keep up the fun cooking vibe.

It was very helpful to be able to ask questions like “Ok Google, how many tablespoons are in one cup?”, “Ok Google, what are the benefits of gelatin?”, “Ok Google, add peanut butter to my shopping list,” and my personal favorite “Ok Google, motivate me” ;)

What a great addition to my new home!

I modified this I Quit Sugar recipe by adding coffee concentrate and cinnamon. The result is deliciously chewy, nutrient dense peanut butter coffee squares that make a great breakfast-and-coffee-in-one solution or an energizing afternoon snack. The creamy texture combined with rich flavor is out of this world satisfying!

Directions:

  1. Dissolve the gelatin in 1⁄3 cup of cold water and let it sit for 5 minutes until it has become gel-like.
  2. Heat the almond milk, peanut butter, rice malt syrup/maple syrup and sea salt in a saucepan until almost boiling. Remove from the heat and stir in the gelatin until it has dissolved.
  3. Pour into a medium sized container (I used the heart bowl). Optionally, sprinkle with mulberries and cacao nibs. Refrigerate for 1 hour, then cut into squares.

Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week.
