5 Types Of Food Instagram Photos Every Food Blogger Should Know

They make us salivate, ponder how we can get more creative in the kitchen, and inspire us to go for a smoothie bowl instead of a piece of New York cheesecake. I’m talking about healthy food porn on Instagram!

Posting pictures of my healthy breakfasts on Instagram is how it all started for Breakfast Criminals. In the past two years I’ve posted about 900 Instagrams, and seen at least to 100,000 photos of healthy food. Which made me realize that even though every popular food blogger has a particular style, there are about five general styles of photos that prevail.

One Sunday afternoon, the sweet smoothie bowl pro @leefromamerica came over with some of her delicious Granolee granola that she made and we got straight to work. The result was a delicious dragonfruit layered smoothie, shot five ways.

1. Straight Up Food Porn

A super intimate view of a smoothie bowl. You can see every chia and sesame seed. This is the kind of Instagram food porn that will make you crave breakfast for dinner.

2. The Succulent

Not only are they adorable plants that any (!) person can grow, they also make a cute bright prop for any food shot. Oh, and in case you’re ever bored and already read all of BuzzFeed food, you can look for your new food prop among 21,256 photos tagged #succulenthoarder on Instagram.

3. Smoothie Bowl Hug

Your smoothie bowl is so cute, you can’t help but hug it. Or you just have to show the world your fresh manicure. Or jewelry. Or all three. Whatever the reason, holding the bowl is definitely a trend among healthy Instagram food bloggers.

4. Layered Smoothie

A layered smoothie parfait… classic. This is one of the most engaging (according to Instagram) ways you can present your food. Even better if it’s overflowing or has nut butter dripping. Yum.

5. Put Your Parfait Up In The Air

Same parfait, but held by a pretty hand against a white wall. The more bracelets, the better. Ideally, the color of your nails and jewelry will match the smoothie. I mean, you shouldn’t even think of making a purple smoothie if your nails are red. This is where your sense of style really shows.
