Do you wake up every day remembering how miraculous this thing called life is?

I’ll be honest: I don’t. I need constant reminders. That’s one of the reasons I started Breakfast Criminals and continue to remind myself and my community to start the day with a nourishing meal prepared with love.

Here’s the trick. Mornings are like a magic portal. If you take a moment to start it right, it affects your whole day. That’s why the Breakfast Criminals motto is “how you start your day is how you live your life.”

That includes a nutrient-rich, colorful and delicious breakfast.

But.. it’s not just about the food. It’s about the energy and the intention that you set for yourself.

I’m excited to share with you these three simple mindful practices that have completely changed my mornings!

Mindful morning practices

1. Feel the Gratitude

Before you open your eyes and get into the daily grind, think of at least one thing you’re grateful for. It could be your health, your pet, your work – anything. Find words that feel natural to you – whether it’s “I’m grateful for…”, or “Thank you for…”, and repeat it inside your head three times. Let your whole body soak up the feeling.

Gratitude is the fastest way to elevate your vibration, and doing it first thing in the morning charges you up in all the right ways!

2. Set an Intention

While you’re getting up, brushing your teeth and getting ready, think of how you want to feel today… in adjectives. It can be one word, three or ten – whatever fully captures the essence of the feeling that will make you feel complete at the end of the day. Bonus points if you not only think it, but also take a moment to write it down .Communicating your intention in this way shoots out a rocket into the Universe, magnetizing your desired feelings. I’m not sure how to explain this scientifically, but doing this exercise works for me every single time.

Take it to the next level with 5-Minute Journal, which has brilliant journaling prompts for starting and ending your day mindfully.

3. Nourish Mindfully

Whether you’re a big breakfast lover or a “just a cup of coffee” kind of person, make it count. Adding awareness to your morning routine can bring joy into simple moments. As you sit down to enjoy your breakfast or coffee, check in with your 5 senses. Notice what you’re:

  • Hearing
  • Smelling
  • Seeing
  • Tasting
  • Touching

Then try to stay aware of all five senses while you’re enjoying your nourishment.

BOOM! Do you feel just how present you are?

When we take the time to truly enjoy your food, it not only brings more satisfaction but it actually even metabolizes better. You can read more about that in one of the best books about the mind-body connection with food I’ve ever read, The Slow Down Diet.
